We had a unique dining experience at Insects in the Backyard and I highly recommend it! The food was delicious, both with and without insects. I especially liked the ant caviar mojito. The restaurant is located in the beautiful Chang Chui Creative Park, where you can explore boutique shops before or after your meal.
Omg! I'm so glad I dragged the whole family here for this awesome meal in this amazing restaurant. Insects in the Backyard serves sustainable, edible insects in a fine dining concept. But don't let the term fine dining deter you as prices are very very reasonable. My younger son and I were looking forward to the meal as we're not squeamish about such foods and have munched down scorpion and meal worms before. What we wanted to experience was insects as the alternative protein source in meals, and how it can draw the uninitiated to accept eating insects. Glad to have convinced and converted my elder son. My wife was a different ballgame altogether. Who knew crickets would taste so good and as a source of protein for the pasta? Or silk worms would pair so well with the spicy spaghetti. Or that ants and ant caviar would go so well with pan fried sea bass. The scallop with ant caviar also paired so well. We finished off the dinner with rich, warm brownie topped with crickets, walnuts, vanilla and dark chocolate ice-cream, and crepe suzette with vanilla ice cream and peaches and big juicy silk worms. Mmmmm. We also enjoyed the service as the staff was attentive, yet not intrusive. The decor is also somewhat quirky and lends to the occasion. Dine and enjoy the experience and food and keep this business going. More people should be aware of this awesome restaurant and delicious food, insects or not. OK. They have a normal menu, which they've labelled the Present. And the alternative menu where they've swapped the protein source with insects or added insects to enhance the flavour and experience is called the Future.
This has got to be one of the most memorable dining experience we've ever had. Everything about Insects in the Backyard is out of this world. Superb service by the attentive staff. They're seasoned enough to know when to leave diners to themselves for some self-directed exploration/wide-eyed marvelling at the sights. They've also seen enough first timers to be sensitive to squeamish people putting on a brave front to impress their better halves. Love the luxurious yet relaxed vibe. Very generously decorated with assorted taxidermied wildlife arranged into dioramas, one in the main dining room and another in the more private back dining area. And that show stealing sculpture of a gigantic bunch of carnivorous plants hanging alongside the numerous antique chandeliers... Unexpected awesomeness. For the uninitiated, the menu is straightforward and has beautifully styled photos to describe what you're getting yourself into. Which makes it all the more amazing that the dishes that were served looked exactly like the ones on the menu. It took some beers to help with the bug eating. Could definitely taste the freshness of the ingredients. Good food! Just don't expect the ravioli, risotto or whatever you order to be the best you've ever tasted. Do expect the fresh insects to add some pleasant crunchiness. My favourite was the grasshoppers. The Thai water bug was the largest and the most challenging one to eat. Order it! Don't let the fine dining label intimidate you. Prices are extremely reasonable. There's a tasting menu specially designed for you to experience a little of everything on the menu. Super fun! I highly recommend.
This place is amazing. They serve high class dishes with the twist of adding insects to it. If you have never tried eating insects this may be the most wonderful and interesting way to connect with this kind of food which may the the main food source of our future. The insects itself were fried and baked and had a really nice spice flavour. It takes some courage for the first bite but it tastes really good. The meals itself are on a high western level and really delicious. The combination of these two styles is in my opinion unique and a must do when you are in bangkok and fan of creative cuisine. The restaurant is part of an awesome big modern art market where you can spend at least a whole afternoon before dining here.
