Elysee Bistro Cafe - Budapest

I don’t expect New Year’s Day dining to be all that great. We had decided to go to a movie, then discovered that the movie was dubbed with no subtitles. Thinking quickly, using the “near me” function, Open Table suggested Elysée. The fried pork crisps spread on brown bread with pickled shallots were decadent. And I would have been happy to have a second bowl of lentil soup, but the duck confit with cherry gravy(?! was impossible to pass up. We found a VERY reasonable bottle of Gere Attila Cabernet Sauvignon that tied everything together. What a find!

I have dined at Élysée several times before, as it is convenient when we have guests visiting the Parliament. Until now, I had always been pleased with the food and service. This time, I planned a date night with my husband and was looking forward to returning to Élysée. However, upon entering, we were casually directed to an empty table, given menus, and then completely forgotten about. The tables around us were served dishes and attended to, but we were left waiting for almost 15 minutes. Despite our efforts to get the attention of the waitstaff, they were too busy socializing at the bar or on their phones to notice us. We eventually decided to leave and as we were putting on our coats, the bartender finally approached us to welcome us. I expressed my frustrations to him, but it was too late. Unfortunately, Élysée has lost my business for good.
