I've never been here (or anywhere in Ireland, unfortunately), but this pub was featured on the cover of an excellent book I read called McCarthy's Bar, by Pete McCarthy. Follow up was a book called Road To McCarthy. Very good reading as well. These are non-fiction works. They can be described as part travel guide, part memoir, part Irish history, part philosophical musings, and hilarious at times. There was to be a third book but unfortunately Mr McCarthy passed before he could write that

This is an excellent place. Great food, great atmosphere, and great people! We chose this place on the recommendation of some locals and were not disappointed. We are from the US and probably look like it. MacCarthy himself came and talked with us, giving us some local insight and fun stories. My wife had the mussels, and I had a beef dish. Couple it with a pint of Murphy's, and you can't go wrong!

Attentiveness and fantastic atmosphere, quiet place with history.
