As always at One Square, the service was exceptional. The staff manage the challenging trick of being both unobtrusive yet also always there when you need them. We really liked the selection of savouries quiche, scotch egg, etc which made a nice change from just sandwiches. The scones were lovely as was the selection of cakes. Endless refills of tea made for a perfect afternoon. Because you can book up till 5pm, it makes a great pre theatre choice for the Usher Hall.
We expected a refined afternoon tea but this is not the case at One Square. Sandwiches are like doorstops, the filled rolls are enormous and difficult to eat, the tea went cold in 5 minutes and the opera cake was like cardboard with plastic icing. The afternoon tea was served in a foyer area which was noisy and gloomy. The scones were good though! For the best afternoon tea in Edinburgh pay a little extra and go to the Balmoral Hotel. It’s what an afternoon tea should be.
Food was cold and presentation was poor potentially due to a large weeding party present. We did complain and one of the main meals were discounted from our bill. Service was very good, though.
We received a gift of a meal at this restaurant. We began with appetizers like salmon with cucumber, among other dishes, and then we were served a three-layered dessert that was incredibly sweet. It was so generous that we still have some leftover sweets three days later! Everything was delicious, and the cost was worth it. I would definitely recommend this place!
