Frankfurt Airport is probably the largest airport I've ever experienced. Not speaking the language was a small hindrance, as I booked my hotel at the airport to save on a day of the rental car. Once I dropped off my rental car, I needed directions on where the airport hotel was located. It was a long walk and my suit bag didn't have wheels. It sure was nice to wake up and be at my destination the next day. There are some amazing food vendors once you check into the airport! I had a sunflower pretzel that was krazy good. Enjoy!
FRA is a solid airport and they do a great job of efficiently moving about 65 million international passengers per year through this facility, but it was definitely designed to be functional rather than fancy and is much more utilitarian looking than airports in some other European cities (Madrid 's airport, for instance, is quite beautiful and ornate in comparison). That said, signage is adequate, it 's relatively easy to find your way around and there are plenty of shops and eateries to pass the time between flights, though I noted that most all restaurants here have similar offerings Lots of breads, pretzels and sandwiches. If you do find a creative looking store or souvenir shop that has something unique that you 're interested in, you should consider buying it then, as once you 're through immigration checkpoints or have passed into other areas of the airport, you may not see exactly the same things again. While you 'll find a few places that offer unique merchandise, most shops in this airport offer similar tacky touristy knickknack souvenirs and trinkets. There are several tax and duty free shops here, a few of them larger with a good selection of items, but still nothing compared to Heathrow, for instance. I bought a few bottles of liquor as gifts, put them in my luggage and transported them home, only to find the same offerings priced cheaper in my local ABC store in the US, so I 'm not certain how much one actually saves by not paying tax and duty . My primary critical comment about this airport is that I found the electronic signage listing gate numbers for departing flights to be a bit lacking. First, it lists the flights in order of their departure time, rather than arrival city as is common in many other parts of the world, but also, many of Lufthansa 's flights either weren 't shown there, or there were so many departing flights listed that the ones I was looking for didn 't appear until just minutes before boarding. In most cases I found the Lufthansa app much more useful and informative than the departing flights screens in this airport.
