Bidra med feedbackWe had pork, ripen and pulled a “Panzer-Special sandwich”. meat was delicious! large side, moist and perfect maisbrot, and the brown sugar sauce was really good.
We are not locals but we do have family in the area. We've driven by this place many times but only today decided to try something new and stop in. I only wish we had found this place sooner. It beats the heck out of some of the chain barbecue joints. Allman's has been in this location since 1954. The building looks dated but it has a wonderful old-time type feel to it. They keep the menu limited which is great because they can concentrate on a few items and do them well. The choices are simple: pork, chicken or ribs. Their original, signature sauce, which they've been using since 1954, is vinegar-based. When they decided to start offering ribs that came up with a brown sugar based sauce which is thicker and a bit sweeter. Either sauce is a good choice for the pork. Speaking of the pork, it has a solid flavor and is nice and juicy. The chicken, in my opinion, does not require any sauce. I don't know what they mixed it with but man was it good. Most places have a sauce on the outside of the chicken for roasting but Allman's mixes something in with the pulled chicken. It was so juicy and flavorful. For sides I had onion rings and hush puppies. Both had a nice crunch. I also had coleslaw on the side. It was creamy but not too much and the cabbage was nice and crunchy, very fresh. Next time I want to try the ribs and pork stew, seasonal October to March.
No wonder this place has been open and popular for so long. The pulled pork was the start of the show. A great smoke but the rub really shows off. Don't sleep on the sides though. Greens, cole slaw and fries were great! Pit Boss sandwich was a show all into itself. Take some pork rinds home with you, that run changes the game. Service was experienced, fantastic and friendly.
I've been going to Allman's since the 1980's. I took 2 friends yesterday who had never been, and they loved it! I recommended their milkshakes, and they each ordered one. They were impressed that they are REAL milkshakes! Ice cream, milk and ice! Bob ordered a pound of the chicken BBQ so he would have enough to share with his dog. The sauce was a bit spicy for her so the server brought some of the pork BBQ without sauce for her! Needless to say, everyone, including the dog, wants to go back.
Probably the best BBQ I've had in Virginia. Reminds me of a hole in the wall place down at my grandma's house in Georgia. Friendly service and decent prices. Pro tip when you go here: get the bread pudding. Trust me.
