During my visit to Kostroma, I searched on HappyCow for a place to eat, but couldn't find one. I was hoping to find some vegetarian options at regular restaurants, but ended up discovering Dobro Cafe on Google. This small cafe only has 3 tables, and the menu is in Russian, but the staff is very helpful in assisting with choices. Surprisingly, the menu is quite diverse for such a tiny place. They offer raw meals with a choice of milk or non-dairy milk, as well as syrniki (small pancakes made from cottage cheese; at Dobro Cafe they make them from tofu and they are delicious). There are also several salad, soup, and sandwich options available. I tried the Shuba-Dooba salad, which is a vegan version of the Russian dish "hering under a fur coat." Instead of herring, they use nori seaweed, and I really enjoyed it. The spicy Indian soup we had was flavorful and not for the faint of heart. We also tried two sandwiches with tofu and falafel, which were quite large. Overall, we left feeling satisfied and the staff was very friendly, even offering us a loyalty card for repeat visits.
The service may be slow, but the vegan food is delicious at this café in Kostroma. It appears to be the only vegan/vegetarian option in town. The breakfast menu includes salads, hummus, falafel, soups, risotto, pasta, and various types of wraps. They also offer vegan desserts, coffee, tea, hot carob drink, masala, and hot chicory drink.

I tried the vegan version of the Russian dish called Herring under a Fur Coat, called Shuba-Dooba, which was made with Nori Seetang instead of herring and was delicious. The spicy Indian soup we tried was also flavorful, though quite spicy. The portions of tofu and falafel dishes we ordered were generous, leaving us very satisfied. The staff was friendly and even offered us a loyalty card, although we were just passing through the city. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and if I ever return to Kostroma, I will definitely dine at Dobro Cafe again. (Review updated from previous review on 2018-10-11)
