La Rose des Sables Laon

My first time having Algerian food was wonderful. The service was outstanding. Even my friend who is a meat and potato person was very pleased.

On passing through, this was the first place we saw with signs of life. Once inside, it revealed a clean and tidy restaurant that was relatively full at lunchtime. Numerous locals looked to be having a good time; the omens were good. The rapid service...was appreciated at lunch. time. Wanting something light, I ordered a vegetarian Tagine. This arrived piping hot, served in the Tagine base. I found the portion large but rather bland; rather too much celery in it. The Tagine darkened with age and use, as I ate downwards revealed a large crack across the whole vessel. In turning it around, the outside had a slight raised part which on inspection turned out the be the screw mechanism of a large jubilee clip which encircled the whole Tagine, clearly holding it all together. The size and potential depth of the crack raised my concerns about the possibility of picking up something very nasty. I reassured myself that the heat of the oven probably would have dealt with any pathogen: only time would tell! In fact I was fine but was mindful of the risk for the rest of the day. If a restaurant is so cavalier with hygiene, it raises questions about their whole approach in the kitchen. This may not have been surprising in a third world country but I could scarcely believe it in France. My final regret was that my very poor French could not allow me to express my disgust to the staff.

Really enjoyed this simple family restaurant. Food was tasty and so were the Algerian red wine. The brick appetisers were a delightful surprise as we've never had them before. Highly recommended particularly if you're visiting Centre Parcs.
