La Palma

As a person who’s worked in the customer service industry for years, I really appreciate the incredible amounts of patience, care, and interest they show their every single customer. I’ve been at La Palma twice and both times I receive amazing food and drink recommendations from the staff who have taken the time to learn everything about their products and recommend items they personally believe in. Not only will I be coming back to this bar, I will be coming back to this hotel because of the incredible staff and quality of food/drinks at this bar.

Or dining experience at this restaurant was bad right from the start. We had a group reservation for 14 people. When we showed up, they said they didn't have it. Luckily, restaurant was almost empty (this was a Friday night) so we were seated anyway. When came time to order, I ordered the bavette. The waiter had to go check with the kitchen if they had it. The first three people in our group ordered meat dishes. And after that, they were out of meat. Early on a Friday night, they were out... They forgot to bring an appetizer, didn't ask if we needed another glass of wine. Waiters were spending time chatting with eachother in the other room near the bar... Just very average all night long. And then, when it came time to pay, they told us they were adding an 18% service charge because of the size of the group. That was stated on the menu so I guess they're allowed... But after such appalling service, to be charged that much left a bitter taste in my mouth. I felt in an episode of Fawlty towers.

When our food got to the table, it took the staff about 10 minutes (and about 2 minutes after we started eating) to realize that one of the pizzas that was supposed to be given to someone else at the table was actually given to two people intending to share a single pizza. We ended up paying for this error by the staff, as it wasn’t clear that “are you alright with this” meant “are you alright with getting charged with a second pizza” and not “are you alright with getting more food on accident and making your friend wait longer.” Perhaps just a misinterpretation on our part, but still a bit disappointing to see on the bill. Service was overall slow and lackluster. The restaurant must have been 50-66% full and it must have been about 1 hour to get our food. We were a larger group at 10 people yes, but even for that I feel the wait was a bit long. Food quality was also not that great. I had a Margherita pizza, which even for “just” a cheese pizza was a bit lacking in flavor. Service was overall pleasant. Staff were nice. Take it from a local: Montreal is a great city for food. If you’re willing to walk 5-10 minutes in any direction, you’ll find food that’s better quality, for a comparable price or even less than La Palma.
