Bidra med feedbackFirst sorry for the bad half eaten pics, the food was so good that we started eating before snapping the pics . We had rice and neer dosa with vanjaram fish curry and vanjaram fry for sides. The fish curry was finger licking good, very authentic. It went well with both rice and neer dosa. Fry was good as well. The waiters here are not sufficient and are slow, so go there only if you have a lot of time to spend.

When it comes to seafood restaurants in Mangalore, there is a saying – The More The Merrier! So for those living/working/studying in and around PVS Kala Kunj area, there is a new seafood restaurant to add to their kitty! The name of the restaurant is Maharajas Fish Bowl and it is located in Sterling Chambers, right above Shristi Restaurant. You cannot miss it because it is located at the junction.<br/ <br/ It has been a week since the restaurant opened, and every time I pass by, I can see that it is very crowded. My colleagues and I thought that we would visit and see what the hype was all about. We are a group of 4 comprising of 3 non-vegetarians and 1 vegetarian. So you must be wondering what a vegetarian would be able to eat in a seafood restaurant. In these situations, I normally call up the restaurant in advance and ask if they have any side dishes made with Paneer, Gobi, Baby Corn or mushroom. <br/ <br/ After calling up Fish Bowl around 11:30 AM in the morning, I was able to speak to the owner and he told me that they do serve vegetarian side dishes such as Paneer Ghee Roast, Mushroom Chilly, etc. He advised me to inform him in advance as it can get extremely crowded during lunch time. So I went ahead and told him that 4 of us will be coming for lunch and ordered one portion of Paneer Ghee Roast.<br/ <br/ As my office is walking distance from Fish Bowl, we took a stroll down Sharada Vidyalaya Road to our destination. One point that I should mention is that there is only 2 wheeler parking outside the restaurant. If you come by 4 wheeler, then you will have to go up and down the road searching for a parking spot. My advice – take a walk if you live around the corner. It’s not only hassle free but you can walk off what you ate afterwards!<br/ <br/ When we entered the restaurant, we could see that most of the tables were occupied. There was one table to the far corner which was empty, so we grabbed it before anyone else did! Fish Bowl has a bright ambiance. You will definitely not feel the ‘heat’ of the rising temperatures outside, nor of the food, because it is quite cool inside with all the ceiling fans turned on. The table is spacious and you can sit leisurely and enjoy your food. Decor is mostly brown tables with brown wicker kind chairs. <br/ <br/ A person – I believe he might be the owner – came immediately to take our order. Told him that I had called earlier in the morning and he remembered about the Paneer Ghee Roast. We ordered for 2 Non- Veg Thalis and One Veg Thali. Along with this, we ordered the following side dishes:<br/ <br/ 1. Maanji (Pomfret) Masala Fry – The size of the Maanji was huge. My friend decided to share the fish with the other two who eat non-veg as she could not finish one all by herself. The Masala was a reddish brown colour and was not spicy at all. You can order this side if you are a Maanji lover.<br/ <br/ 2. Anjal (Kingfish) Masala Fry – My other two colleagues ordered for an Anjal Masala Fry. Just like the Pomfret, this fish was loaded with Masala which made it taste even better. For garnishing, they serve lemon, onion and tomato on the side.<br/ <br/ 3. Paneer Ghee Roast – I love Paneer and its various forms such as Chilly, Manchurian, Butter Masala, etc. However, whenever I visit a restaurant like this one, I would prefer to eat Paneer Ghee Roast. The dish was loaded with pieces of juicy Paneer which had been tossed in the ghee roast Masala. Fortunately, it was not a bit spicy at all and this was good for me because I cannot handle spicy food. Just like any other ghee roast dish, this one too was loaded with cashews. Would recommend this side dish for those vegetarians who visit Fish Bowl. <br/ <br/ As mentioned earlier, we ordered for two different kinds of Thalis. The Veg Thali was served in a compartment plate which reminded me of my childhood. It’s nice to eat in one of these so the dishes don’t get mixed with one another. The following were the items in the Veg Thali. <br/ <br/ a. Pickle<br/ <br/ b. Sanadige Pappad– Konkanis refer to Sanadige as “Vodi.’ These are rice based sun dried items which are deep fried to make crispy fritters. They can be eaten on its own or with your main course. Of course, there was a huge Pappad sitting on the mountain of rice on the plate. <br/ <br/ c. Okra Fry (Bhendi Upkari) – Bhendi is a very popular vegetable which many of us eat at least once a week. The taste was okay probably because it was very bland in spite of there being green chillies.<br/ <br/ d. Potato and Navy Bean Songa (Gravy) – Another popular dish in any Konkani household is a dish called ‘Songa.’ The gravy will be coconut based and loaded with red chillies. Don’t be fooled by the colour because it was not spicy at all. However, the songa had generous pieces of potato and navy bean. <br/ <br/ e. Dhalithoy – If you have ever visited a Konkani’s house, then surely you would have eaten their style of dal called “Dhalithoy.” The Dhalithoy has to be perfect in order to complement the rest of the items in the meal. With the correct pinch of hing and the right amount of mustard seeds and red chillies, you will be able to enjoy the Dhalithoy with rice or even by itself!<br/ <br/ f. Rice – There was a huge heap of rice served in the biggest compartment of the plate. The taste was good, but the texture was a bit hard and when the rice is hard, you will find it difficult to enjoy your meal as well. <br/ <br/ g. Buttermilk with Kokum – Kokum is a fruit which is red in colour and coincidentally, the buttermilk was also a pinkish red in colour. I am not a fan of Buttermilk and normally skip it though it is supposed to help in digestion, especially after a heavy meal like this. But this time, I decided to take a sip and immediately, I could feel the spices travel down my throat. The aftertaste of course is something very sweet. <br/ <br/ h. Rasam – For those who prefer to have Rasam with their rice instead of Dhalithoy can certainly try this combination. It was hot and loaded with the usual spices and this is why many prefer to drink it after their meal. <br/ <br/ 99% of the items in the Non-Veg Thali are the same as the Veg one. The only difference is that you will get a fish curry instead of Dhalithoy. The fish curry was reddish orange in colour and had a huge piece of ‘Bangude’ (Mackerel) sitting in the middle of it. Heard the gravy was very spicy, but tasted delicious. Another thing you will find in the Non-Veg Thali is a spoonful of Dry Shrimp Chutney which tastes delicious with plain rice or mixed with the fish curry. <br/ <br/ I could see many people ordering a bowl of extra rice as they still had their curry and fries in their plate. An extra order of rice is just Rs. 10 and it is served in a cute little steel bowl. <br/ <br/ After or even with a heavy meal like this, I am sure you would love to drink something really cold and refreshing right? Then how about ordering for a glass of Fresh Lime Juice to quench your thirst? You can choose between sweet or salt or even both. I took a sip just to see if the flavour was sweet or not, and I must tell you that it was. <br/ <br/ As soon as the customers have left, the tables are cleaned immediately so that the next set of people does not have to wait for a table. <br/ <br/ The bill came up to a total of Rs. 1,120. The owner/servers/waiters are all concerned about whether we enjoyed the meal or not, if we want anything to be served, etc. The owner went to each table to get feedback from the customers. <br/ <br/ Here is my overall rating of Maharajas Fish Bowl:<br/ <br/ Service: 5/5 – The food is served quickly. We were able to order, eat and take a few photos all within a span of 45 minutes. <br/ <br/ Ambiance 5/5 – Bright and spacious – You will not feel as if you are in a Seafood Restaurant because the aroma of fish is not circulating as much as other places. That is probably because the kitchen is located away from the dining area, and there also happens to be washroom and sink located at the far end of the restaurant which is not visible unless you go to that side.<br/ <br/ Food – 4/5 – The rice could have been softer, the Masala on the fish fry could have been slightly spicier and the Okra Upkari could have had a little bit more flavour. Otherwise, the food was good and you must visit in order to find out for yourself!<br/ <br/ Maharajas Fish Bowl is located in Sterling Chambers, PVS Kala Kunj Road, Kodialbail, Mangalore – 575-003. Contact No: (0824) 4266818 9686599818. They are open in the evening in case you want to drop in for dinner. If you want to take away as well, all you need to do is call up and place your order.
