Bidra med feedbackThere is plenty to commend a visit to Masseria Vagone. It is a wonderful old building with interesting bits and pieces pointing to its long time role in the countryside. It is also great to come across somewhere which has not been sanitised for tourist consumption so you are in for a genuine experience of an agriturismo where the food you consume has been (largely) made on the premises. All this plus a really nice family running the place and even throwing in mozzarella making demonstrations. Is there a but? Well at €35 per head for a set meal including local wine, you can't complain about the value. However, in truth, the quality of the meal was pretty standard good old fashioned Pugliese cooking. But it was the fact that the antipasti was served dish by dish followed by a pause before the primo came out that all contributed to a meal starting at 8.30 and which extended until after midnight. Fine for some people but we were not the only table looking exhausted by the end. Life in the very slow lane indeed!
Good choice for a relaxing lunch and afternoon in a simple, rustic, REAL agriturismo. All the food was clearly home cooked and tasty, and the clients are all local. Homemade mozzarella and ricotta star in an extravagant line up of tasty antipasti that give you a great taste of true Pugliese country food. The simple pasta and mix of roast meats are of good quality and well executed. The house wine is acceptable and the staff is polite. It's a working farm: donkeys, goats, chickens and more live just off the edge of the parking lot. It's charming without being one of the polished to touristy perfection masserie you can also find in the area. The pace for Sunday lunch is very slow, so be prepared for 3+ hours. Feel free to have a little walk in the garden or courtyard while you wait between courses in order to marvel at the monumental old olive trees. Why rush when you're in Italy, enjoying one of the many lovely traditions of the area? (The directions on their website make it easy to find just a couple of turns off the SS16 and you're there. Good honest people providing and great value and a pleasant experience. Recommended!
