Not sure where so many of the reviews for this place came from. It’s a homey place for a glorified cafeteria, but I felt way overpriced for the amount served. The food is well done, true, but not all of it was ‘homemade,’ if you know what I mean. The salad bar was relatively paltry in my opinion, with a small bowl called a medium salad, at $4.75 each. We both had beef tips in gravy, which was done well, and green beans, and a potato side. These were well-seasoned and tasty, but they were not overly large portions. One of us got lima beans (because she is a sick person unconcerned with the slimy texture of barely edible foods) which she declared heavenly. Meal prices were 1 Meat/2 sides $7.05, 1 Meat/3 sides $8.90. Somehow, I got charged for another side at $1.89 – why didn’t I just get the 3-side price? – but I didn’t catch it until later, so bad on me. We didn’t try any of the pies, but everyone in there was getting slices with their meal, or to go, so I suspect they are special. All said, the food seems to be pretty good, but you don’t get huge portions, and they seem overpriced to me. Service is really limited to how friendy the folks are on the chow line, and the servers that address issues and bus tables after you’re done, so I’m not sure how folks have pumped up the service scores. There really isn’t any. I’m sure this place has its fans for the food quality, but overall, I was not as impressed.
When you want a hearty Southern meal, this is the place you go to! It is one of my new favorite lunch destinations. It's a little bit of a drive to get to from my workplace but so worth it! I wish there were more places like this in the area. It never disappoints! Oh my goodness at all the pies!
Very nice atmosphere. It was obvious they have a lot of repeat customers and after we tasted the food we understood why. Cafeteria style with good prices and great service.
After checking for hotels in Perry, GA, we checked for a place to eat. The photos and reviews for the Oil Lamp Restaurant were so great that we cut our trip short by one day so that we could eat there. Check their hours if you plan to eat there. We had the roast beef and mashed potatoes. The gravy was just like home cooked done right. We took 4 pieces of pie with us. All delicious. They were observing all precautions during covid. Connie and Desarie were masked, as was the other lady. The place was immaculate. They were very helpful assisting us getting our drinks to the table. Couldn't ask for better service, tasty food and clean conditions during the pandemic. This place is on the map for us. All future vacations will include a stopover in Perry just to eat there. Wonderful comfort food!
