What a lovely jubly old English style pub and restaurant. Shame we could only have a soft drink And stay longer. The smell brings back memories how pubs used to be with open fires Its a must people to visit And staff are amazing and professional Love it And lovely bear gardens
Lovely Sunday lunch booked a takeaway and slot for 90 mins. Sunday was shining so umbrella and heater not needed but good to know they have them.
We have been to this place a few times for drinks but never for food. We decided to go for Sunday roast. My wife had the chicken and I went for the pork belly. The plates are big with lots of veg and a massive Yorkshire pudding. The pork belly wasn't a cut of pork but a made up roll coverd in bread crumbs and only one slice. It was nice but a bit excessive for £16.50. The chicken was the quarter breast section. It was a bit on the dry side. Again a bit excessive at £16. It has a big beer garden which is really nice. weather permitting). In general I would go back again for food but I don't think I will be getting the roasts.
As with most pubs this place has been few a few iterations (it’s clearly ancient, so no surprise). In my time It’s been OK, it was a dump, it was OK again, now it’s a classy foodie pub. Owned by Mosaic, so hardly independent, but a small chain by todays standards. The garden is one of the larger ones in the area, on a fairly busy road, but certainly no motorway – if you happen to be here on a day when the Cricket club are playing in the field opposite it really does add to the feeling of being in a village, despite being in Zone 5. Staff are great – polite, patient and knowledgeable. If you order too much or too little they will politely but not forcefully mention, they also have that wonderful ability to check if you need anything occasionally just when you actually do. Food is great – Sunday roast is difficult to beat but they put on a decent showing on other days. The open kitchen is an asset rather than a liability as you can see the chefs giving the food enough respect that you do want to eat it. All good so far. The gents toilet stinks. It’s not just slightly unpleasant – it really stinks of the sewers. This has not changed in the last 3 years so it appears it is something they have just given up on. There is almost no water pressure in the taps so washing your hands is a challenge and the driers are frequently out of order. Where do the staff wash their hands?
