Le Monument - Porto

Celebrate our anniversary. We had the 14-speed menu that was unique and beautiful in its presentation and was delicious! So a nice way to spend our last night in Porto Top Notch experience!

Beautiful culinary journey through the different regions of Portugal. Friendly personal service makes for the very formal, if not boring, attitude.

Fantastic food, carefully presented and delivering powerful flavors, always balanced. The Sommelier also chose perfect pairing wines.

I have mixed feelings about Le Monument. The plating was unique, but not particularly cohesive. At times, it was refreshing, but at times, it was borderline gimmicky. When an elegant plate is placed beside a cartoonish rendition, it's difficult to embrace the juxtaposition as intentional. Taste wise, there were only two memorable flavours out of the 14 course tasting, which leaves one for want. I'm a bit on the fence with the service. The wait staff were attentive, but the majority seemed inexperienced. (I.e., Communicating and dealing with undercooked fish; sommelier's eager alcohol sale versus meagre pours by the glass portions were less than what I've received as samplings at wine tastings I particularly enjoyed the ambience of the setting, though this is partly due to quiet we observed during the low season, hence the added star rating. (We were amongst three tables dining that evening and we were first to arrive, so we had the benefit of the entire dining hall's grandeur to freely soak in. I would give the atmosphere a higher rating if we had not encountered the few mishaps mentioned above. Since person to person interactions factor into the overall atmosphere of the dining experience, I've deducted a star. For a Michelin star restaurant, I was a bit disappointed with the food and how some of the issues were managed. Our main server was superb, though, and everyone was polite. The issues were not with a lack of professionalism, but inexperience.
