Athens Tavern - Richmond

We absolutely enjoyed our delightful dinner. The service was exceptional. This was the first restaurant where my eldest daughter had saganaki with flames when she was around 8 years old. Now she’s in her 30s, and we’ve gained new fans of retsina as well!

If I could give more stars, I absolutely would! This place is truly a hidden gem in Richmond. If you love food, you need to check it out. I tried the vegetarian moussaka, and I can honestly say I've never tasted eggplant cooked so perfectly. I also had the tzatziki appetizer, which was absolutely divine! The vegetables were incredibly fresh—like they had just picked the arugula straight from the garden. My friend ordered the souvlaki chicken pita with Greek potatoes, and the chicken was incredibly fresh and beautifully cooked. The potatoes? Some of the best I've ever tasted! To top it off, our server was extremely friendly and personable.

However, my last visit was marred by poor service. Our server seemed to forget about us, rarely coming back to check on our table or refill our water. At one point, I noticed her at the bar counting her tips and stuffing them into her purse instead of attending to us. It was pretty frustrating, especially since we weren't close to closing time. Another server behind the bar often seemed oblivious to our presence. I should mention that I've had decent service here in the past. The last time I stopped coming, about 15 years ago, was because of a loud argument between staff that was disruptive. My suggestion would be to visit on a quieter night when the restaurant isn't busy and the servers can focus. The quality of the food definitely makes it worth a try, despite the inconsistent staff.

Superb restaurant for Greek food in RVA! I'm so glad my friend told me ro fo here. Josie was super friendly, like she was a friend from ten years ago we were reconnecting with.The food was delicious as well, very good juicy salad and chicken kabob was very filling and tasty. Thank you so much for providing high quality Greek food to the area!
