Bidra med feedbackI visited Santa Fe for the first time with my daughter. I have Celiac disease and have a difficult time finding a restaurant that is safe for me to eat at, as even the smallest amount of gluten can make me very ill. I discovered Boxcar through Google, and let me tell you, it was AMAZING! Our server, Allen, went above and beyond to accommodate my Celiac disease. He made recommendations for the bang bang shrimp appetizer and the shrimp and grits entree. Although the shrimp and grits were not labeled as gluten-free, Allen contacted the head chef, who wasn't even working at the time, to find a way for me to enjoy this dish. I have never felt so important and understood. Normally, I receive eye rolls from servers when I explain the importance of careful preparation due to my condition, which is why I usually avoid dining out. However, Allen was fantastic, and I greatly appreciate his attentiveness. The bang bang shrimp and shrimp and grits were incredible! The kitchen staff was extremely quick in preparing our meals. Boxcar is definitely a must-visit restaurant in Santa Fe. We are only in town for 4 days, but we will definitely dine here again before we leave.
If you enjoy a casual sports bar atmosphere, you will enjoy this restaurant. The food is not gourmet, but it is satisfying. The Green Chile cheeseburger was cooked perfectly and the fries were good, although I wish there were more of them. The service was quick. I tried the Chilemargarita, which was definitely spicy but a bit too sour for my taste. It seemed to be made with a house sweet and sour mix, which I found slightly off-putting. However, at $5 during happy hour, it may be worth a try. Beer prices are reasonable, with pints ranging from $4-5. I would return if I was in the area and looking for a quick meal. Overall, with a few adjustments, this place could be a great option for a casual night out. Feel free to reach out to me for complimentary margarita consulting and feedback.
We were very disappointed with our experience at this restaurant. My family and I, visiting from Ohio, specifically chose this place because we needed a gluten-free menu. Initially, we were told that they couldn't accommodate our group of 7 adults and 3 children with booster seats, but eventually, they pushed tables together to make room for us. However, we were not allowed to sit in the open space up a few steps as it was apparently reserved for the manager. On a positive note, our waitress was patient and helpful. Unfortunately, my sister's salad had what looked like a mealworm in it. She sent it back and received a replacement salad, but we were only given a 50% discount on the meal. We were expecting better service and quality in a tourist town like this.
I would give this place ten stars if possible. The employees were incredibly nice when we arrived. I informed the host and waitress that I have celiac disease, and they promptly informed the manager. He came over to introduce himself and the waiter asked about my dietary restrictions. They reassured me that they take food allergies seriously and wanted to ensure my safety. I ordered the adult grilled cheese with gluten-free bread and enjoyed some dedicated gluten-free sweet potato waffle fries. I also had a great experience with the food and service, and best of all, I didn't get sick. I will definitely be returning in the future!
