Azul Profundo - Santa María Huatulco

This lovely restaurant on the beach at our condo, the Camino Real, was a perfect destination when we were tired of catching a cab into town to eat. We were seated right next to the surf, a lovely candle lit table, and the service was professional and attentive. The menu offers many variations on seafood and fresh fish as well as standard meats like chicken, steak and duck. We really enjoyed the bacon wrapped scampi in cheese and the red snapper and ahi tuna dishes are both fresh and tasty. The wine list is very reasonable and has a wide range of offerings from Mexico, Spain, France, and the US. The only downside is that it is only open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A reservation is a good idea.

Restaurants, like people can and do change. Azul Profundo was one of our favourite restaurants in Huatulco, until a disastrous experience some time ago, so we were somewhat hesitant to dine there a few days ago. The change from our previous experience was amazing. We were greeted on arrival as old friends and led to our favourite table in the corner closest to the ocean. The menu was extensive and the wine list reasonable. Fortunately, Juvenal, one of our favourite waiters, was there to look after us and even remembered that I liked my main course to be unsalted. (Sin sal como siempre? he asked).

A nice relaxed restaurant with wonderful staff. Unpretentious, but quality was there. We return every year for the terrific skirt steak. Only downside were packaged whipped potatoes woth the steaks.

This restaurant has a magnificent view, and that’s it. We ate there twice. I had the grilled chicken breast which was tough and dried out. For dinner, grilled red snapper. Again if was way over cooked. They made me a new plate but it was not red snapper and raw in the middle. It took 51 minutes to get my first plate of fish. I would go back for drinks in the day time just to have that view.

We had a great meal at Azul Profundo. We had a great tuna plate and also some nice shrimp with sauce that was to die for. On the dessert side I was surprise on how well texture wise they where. The only thing is the drink menu was not impress. We are going back soon and we will dine there again.
