Bidra med feedback7:45 on a Sunday in Selkirk, we're starving and nothing seems to be open, not even the walmart. In desperation we went to Ocean Palace on Main Street because it seemed to be open. It was your usual, windowless, rec-room like large, traditionally-canadiana-chinese style restaurant. We ordered several dishes and everything that arrived was fresh, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The wonton deluxe soup was filled with fresh, perfectly cooked shrimp and crispy vegetables, chicken, beef, pork and wontons. The lemon chicken was perfect, not overly breaded with real chicken breast. We had crispy sesame chicken ( which wasn't crispy due to the sauce it was in) , shanghai noodles ( the thin noodles) breaded shrimp ( to die for ) shrimp mixed vegetables, and a surprise called the dragon special. The dragon special was a half dozen large breaded meatballs made with sausage and bacon. It was tasty and served with sweet and sour sauce which wasn't necessary. Though it was perfectly fine, I wouldn't order it again unless I was having a meat craving. Rice came with the meal, and nothing was back-filled with onions or green peppers like some like to do to make the order look larger. We will go back to this restaurant again. Prices were very reasonable, portions were large. Service was fast and friendly.
I have been craving Chinese food for the past week. It was a busy day and the weather was turning. Snow was falling so we did not want to go out to eat. We have not been at Ocean Palace for quite some time. I checked on line for reviews but there was not much recently. There was some indication of a possible management switch about a year ago. As I could not locate a website, I decided to drive down to check out the menu and order. It was 5:25 p.m. when I arrived. There were no vehicles parked in front. There was a sandwich board just inside the door with the lunch special on it as well as a whiteboard with lunch information. I did not see anyone in the restaurant. I was greeted by an Asian gentleman I did not recognize. I ordered Cantonese Chow Mein, Chicken Fried Rice and Lemon Chicken. He totaled my bill $31.02 and said it would be 15 minutes. I went to do an errand while I waited. When I returned my order was ready. It was very hot.The portions were a good size. The Chicken Fried Rice was fine but could have used a bit more chicken and peas. The Cantonese Chow Mein had lots of noodles, broccoli, some mushrooms, a few carrots, one shrimp and a few pieces of cauliflower. I have definitely had better but it was okay. The Chicken was very good as was the lemon sauce. The batter was not too thick. I quite enjoyed it.It definitely was sufficient to curb my craving.
What a great restaurant! My husband and I have gone here for many years. The atmosphere is Chinese Chic. The owners have brought back many beautiful landscape paintings from their visits to China. The food is very tasty and they will accommodate you if you want it msg free. They also have an excellent take out service, which is what I did the last time I was there.
I only have ordered food here maybe 3 times and everytime I do i remind myself why the prices are ok but the amount and taste you get compared to other Chinese places around does not compare.
For flavour, value and selection, Ocean Palace is worth the visit. Dine in or take out, you won't be dissapointed.
