Montag - St. Goar

Internet was not working at our hotel so we stopped here to use my tablet. Internet W-Lan Wifi was free if you purchased something. I got to have a beer and check my email. Their menu had lots of interesting items.

We asked for a discount but was given a form to fill out and have customs sign it ,as they knew full well we would not get it back the taxes. my wife bought several Stieff bears here and was promised 10% off at the cash. Not happy with the service got a free fridge magnet though. be careful they promise one thing and do another.

I haven't stayed at the Montag hotel but consider skipping the Montag Beerstein store. Lots of steins and magnets but the prices didn't seem to be good and I didn't feel welcome there. I, as a person who is obviously partially sighted using a hand magnifier, was scolded when trying to examine the large stein on display and strongly discouraged from touching items which were for sale. I got the feeling the shopkeeper thought I was going to steal something. If I can't touch things, how do you think I know what it is I am thinking of buying? Sir, your market is almost entirely tourists - if you want to increase revenue, find ways to cater to this diverse customer base instead of alienating it. The store was earily empty so I guess I wasn't the only one who felt uneasy there. I bought my stein elsewhere.

So we had been in Germany for a week and were getting used to being the only English speaking people in any restaurant and given that we only speak a few words of German were very used to doing a lot of smiling and pointing to communicate. We were so surprised to walk in here and hear nothing but English spoken; it seems the owner is from Australia. The clientele was mostly college age folks from the U.S. We really had to laugh at how we felt instantly transported back home for a bit! The food was great! We had some steaks smothered in onions, and some potatoes fried with bacon; everything is better with bacon isn't it? The salads were great too; a nice sampling of mixed greens, cucumbers in a cream sauce, and carrots. Great place to come for the food, and if your brain needs a quick break from enjoying immersion in German language and culture!

If you like beer steins they always have a great selection in the beerstein store. They also carry steins of quality and many limited editions.
