I've never had much luck in finding good Vietnamese food in the Kelowna area. I try, but just get disappointed time and time again. We had seen this place from the highway every time we drive through Summerland, and this time, we were hungry and decided to give it a try (I get accused of being a Viet food snob for not trying in the OK valley anymore so thought I'd give it a try). The place is run by Vietnamese people - very good first sign. The menu has the dish names in vietnamese. Another good sign. The spelling of "pho" on their main restaurant sign is spelled wrong - very BAD sign.Anyway, we were a family of 4 that day. The husband and kids had bubble teas and I had a "cafe sua da" which was pretty good. One of the bubble teas was quite runny and we were given a discount because of that. The adults had pho (my husband had the special "pho dac biet" and I had the "pho nam bo vien" (brisket with beef balls). The brisket was tender enough and i think I got a total of 2-4 half beef balls (so basically 1 - 2 whole beef balls) in the medium size. The broth was okay...not bad but not overly flavourful. They did have the bean sprouts and onions already in the noodles, but no basil or limes. I very much detest "pho" restaurants who do not serve basil with their pho. The kids shared a vermicelli with grilled pork (3 skewers). The pork skewers looked nothing like I have ever seen before that usually comes with a vermicelli bowl, but the kids seemed to like it enough. The spring rolls we ordered (extra) for the kids were long and skinny...also like i had never seen before either. No complaints from the kids (the teenager is also very picky when it comes to vietnamese food) so i trust that it was alright, even though it was quite pricey (around $20 for the vermicelli and extra spring rolls). It also didn't help that I overhead the server tell a friend that they had "watered down" the cuisine for local tastebuds. From the reviews I see on here, apparently "watered down" vietnamese food still works and it makes me sad. It'll be a long time before I try Vietnamese food again in the Okanagan Valley. I'm tired of the disappointment of overpriced watered down food.
Picked up 2 Vietnamese Subs and two orders of deep fried spring rolls. The bread used for the subs was delicious however the lack of filling was very poor, very little meat was used. We are used to fully loaded subs, there was substantially more bread than filling. The spring rolls were light and crispy but had a very strange taste-almost like ground beef and potato filling. We actually threw them away which has NEVER happened before - anywhere! This was our first visit and likely our last, unfortunately. Next time we will try either Penticton or West Kelowna.
Popped by after a hike up giants head. Deliciously filling. Pho soup was on point. The peanut sauce with the fresh rolls was to die for. It's no wonder they brought two bowls of it out with our order. Will be back soon.
A good local restaurant with hard working and pleasant Vietnamese staff---the Buun is excellent and they offer take away as well
