1022 South J - Tacoma

As with most of my reviews, I will start with what I like DIDN'T about 1022 SOUTH J. It is located on Hilltop in Tacoma. That's it. That's the only thing I found I don't care. The Hilltop neighborhood in Tacoma goes through a gentrification process that fights tooth and nail. The view of the neighborhood is not helped by the fact that one of the largest neighbors is a prison and everywhere is discovered with bail bondman offices. However, it is not funny how, mixed with all that, are hidden gems like 1022 SOUTH J. It is unpretentious, unapologetic from the area and the people living in it. It is the kind of place where the usual relationships with the bar staff have gone from the bar. It is the kind of place where, at the end of a working day or from a trip, you can meet or go and enjoy surprisingly good food and amazing cocktails. I enjoyed the pommel fries, a BLT and crispy Brussel sprouts, while my date had the pimento cheese and the 1022 fried chicken without bread. The fires were perfectly crisp and their box was juicy and perfectly finished. The beer selection was disappointing, but they knew how to make a cocktail. If you ever defend yourself in a hotel in downtown Tacoma or defend someone in court, you should really try this place.

Some of the best bartenders in Tacoma for cocktails. Sunday night has a good happy hour and had a good amount. Maybe just a coincidence, but 80's music is always a good thing.

Cocktails are worth every penny! Your seasonal cocktail menu is combined with love and great flavors! Leave the laid back, friendly staff you fool, these are bar professionals! And they know how to create balanced, inspired and crazy delicious cocktails! This is my favorite spot to drink in Tacoma and one of my favorite bars in the northwest!

Hands down the best happy hour on Hilltop. $5 well drinks, $4 wine, and variety of pallet pleasing small plates. The pimento flatbed is pictured.
