Albergue La Escuela - Vega de Valcarce

Good breakfast stop during my camino. Service and food were good. Had tortilla and juice for EUR 5. Toilet was nice and clean.

TripAdvisor seems to think La Escuela is only a restaurant which is completely wrong. I stayed the night at La Escuela while walking the Camino to be fresh in the morning for the final push up to O Cebreiro and Alto de San Roche. It is actually in the tiny village of Laguna de Castilla which is the last village before O Cebreiro. The bar/albergue is run by a lovely couple who speak no English but managed to communicate fine with this non-Spanish speaker. The place consists of a bar/restaurant with an albergue that has dormitories and private rooms with en suite bathrooms. I stayed in one of the private rooms which was a reasonable size with twin beds and a good bathroom with large shower enclosure. Everything was clean and in good condition. There was a lovely view from the window out to trees and the hills behind. Along with the sleeping rooms the albergue also has sinks for washing clothes and lines for drying and a great outdoor terrace. Unfortunately the weather on the day I was there prevented the use of any of the outdoor facilities. The skies opened soon after I arrived and it felt very cosy to be tucked up dry inside. The heating in the room was good and there was also a fire in the bar which seemed just right with the nasty weather outside. The wifi worked well in both the bedroom and the bar. I had the set menu in the evening and it was good plain food that was plentiful and well cooked. When the husband realized that I would be leaving before breakfast the next morning he wrapped a piece cake for me to carry away as a morning snack. So nice. La Escuela is a very good place to stay and probably even more so on a dry summer night. Recommended.

Home cooked food. Very tasty and delicious. Lots and lots of food. You won’t go hungry if you eat here. Although, if you are a vegetarian, which one of our friends is, you will find that the Spanish aren’t very good at recognising exactly what this is.

Parada obligada en el ascenso a Cebreiro. Gente agradable, buenos precios y un buen descanso con buenas vistas

Un albergue muy preparado, condiciones higienicas perfectas, personal muy atento, limpieza excelente. De lo mejor en los que pernocte.
